FINE FURNITURE

At Chris Kovacs Designs, each piece of furniture is designed and built one at a time to your specifications. We pride ourselves on being able to develop unique custom designs for our clients. Most of our products start as back-of-the-envelope sketches and are then developed into finished pieces of furniture. We consider each piece of furniture to be a work of art that is functional, long-lasting, and inclusive of traditional features that allow it to fit beautifully into any setting.

The furniture surfaces are hand-planed until glassy smooth then lightly sanded to achieve a trademark satin finish. Finishes are applied with a brush or rag and hand-rubbed to achieve an even, silky sheen. Most pieces are finished with a mixture of tung oil and varnish, which yields a lustrous finish that enhances the color and grain patterns in the wood. Table surfaces are coated with an additional finish that has a higher percentage of varnish. This protects the table surface from water and alcohol damage and improves its scratch resistance.

Strong traditional joinery ensures pieces that will last for generations. Dovetails are the hallmark of fine furniture, and they are used on all drawers and cabinets. Sliding dovetails are also used to provide long-lasting strength and durability. Mortise and tenon joints are found in almost every piece and are extremely strong, especially when a peg passes through the joint holding the tenon in place.

Pegs are often square, diamond or oval shaped and are made with a different species of wood, adding contrast and uniqueness to the furniture. Chamfered edges and unique wooden drawer and door pulls enhance the visual and tactile appeal of our furniture.
